6 Most Overlooked Home Maintenance Items

Are you shortening the lifespan of your appliances?

overlooking these items could cost you $$

🏡 As your friend in Real Estate, I’m going to do you a favor. I’m going to remind you to drain your water heater, vacuum your fridge coils- and then some. Putting off home maintenance items could end up costing you, so as much as of an inconvenience it is to make time for, it will be an even greater inconvenience down the road.

top 6 overlooked home maintenance items

1️⃣ Dust your refrigerator coils- when was the last time you checked behind or under your fridge? If you’re like most home owners, probably never. Letting dust and dirt build up leads to your refrigerator working overtime, which leads to faster breakdowns and a shorter lifespan. In order to keep your fridge running smoothly, vacuum those coils once a year. For optimized efficiency, clean every 6 months.

2️⃣ Cleaning the gutters- collected debris in gutters can cause rotting, sagging, leaking and not to mention pesky rodents that could get into your attic. Similarly, wasps and hornets may also build nests. That’s why it’s important to clean your gutters regularly, ideally every quarter.

3️⃣ Flush the water heater- overtime, sediment builds up in the bottom of the water tank and needs to be flushed every year. You don’t need to call the plumber, check this video out to DIY. Neglecting to flush the tank once a year will shorten the lifespan of your tank!

4️⃣ Stove/vent hood- if you cook at home, you should be cleaning your vent hood monthly. Like most things, if it isn’t cleaned regularly, it won’t work efficiently.

5️⃣ Dryer back and vent- not only does it reduce risk of fire to clean out the dryer vent hose, it’s also a good idea to remove the back of the dryer once a year to vacuum out the dust and lint that gets trapped there.

6️⃣ Emergency kit- Alabama is prone to severe weather, even more reason to be prepared with an emergency kit. If you aren’t sure what to put in your kit, check this emergency kit list out. Make sure you discuss your emergency plan with those who live with you and everyone knows where the emergency kit is located!
